HYPOCRISY
Beware of those who bring gifts of Gold and Silver and Honey and Perfume, for they will surely exsanguinate you.
Passion, Talent, and Genius should never be equated with true Decency.
In the final analysis there resides much greater Truth, Divinity and Sincerity in an Atheist than in any sanctimonious Hypocrite.
Captain John Newton was a glaring example of such an
anathema.
He wrote "Amazing Grace" which was the hymn that out-sold all other music.
Its popularity exceeded the combined sales of all of the songs that were ever composed by the Beatles and of Mozart.
The popularity of "Amazing Grace" was largely due to the fact that it became the clarion call of those West Africans who were kidnapped and transported to the West Indies and to the Southern States of America and sold as slaves.
The hymn turned out to be the most potent unifying influence and the preserver of Hope for those hapless slaves.
And it eventually contributed to their manumission.
"Amazing Grace" was published in 180 languages and it remains the most lucrative and the most popular product that the music industry has ever marketted.
There is no congregation within the realm of Christianity that has failed to respond to its pathos and its tear-jerking remorse.
For many generations the pews have been filled with worshippers who became emotionally-overwhelmed by a hymn that was authored by one of the most wicked rascals that ever lived.
By comparison Hitler was an anaemic amateur.
John Newton was the only child of the Owner-Captain of a Slave Ship.
His mother who was a staunch and ostentatious Christian died when he was six years old.
His father abandoned him soon after the death of his mother and left him with his mother's relatives.
When John was eleven years old he set out to find his father.
John eventually located his father when his fathers Slave Ship entered the Liverpool harbour for repairs.
The younger John Newton then begged his father for a job.
Captain Newton agreed to employ his son as a deck-hand on a trial basis and they soon sailed out to West Africa to take on a load of "primitive and savage black slaves."
When the Slave Ship reached West Africa young John was surprised to discover that his father had a wife in Sierra Leone.
He soon discovered that the new Mrs. Newton was an illustrious black Princess and the daughter of the Paramount Chief.
He also learned that their wedding was a gala affair.
Celebrations persisted for several weeks and that the entire region revelled and feasted at their expense.
As a Princess she was a very powerful and privileged person and she was vigorously protected by her father.
She owned several vast tracts of farmland and she was a ruthless and avaricious virago.
She employed several Gangs to hunt down and to kidnapp healthy young people so that they can be exported as Slaves.
The kidnapped citizens were forced to work on her farms until her husband's Slave Ship was ready to load them onto his boat.
She and her husband worked very well together and had earned a great reputation for supplying high-quality slaves.
Soon after arrival on West African soil Captain Newton dismissed his son as inadequate and he refused to take him on the next passage.
He left young John in the care of his step-mother.
But young John soon discovered that his step-mother was a ruthless, dominating, and avaricious harridan.
He therefore jumped at the opportunity of purchasing a Slave Ship that had arrived at the port but whose Owner had become too old and too feeble to proceed.
The young John Newton thus became the Captain and the Owner of a Slave Ship.
He prospered rapidly as a Slave Trader and he acquired a reputation in the Slave Markets of the West Indies for supplying Slaves of the highest quality.
He also acquired a reputation throughout the West Indies as a loud-mouthed drunkard. It is on record that he was jailed on several occassions for being "intoxicated in the public domain" and for "breach of the public peace" and for "Rape a Nigger girl in a Public Square".
On one occassion whilst in a drunken state he boasted that his Slaves fetched a higher price simply because he never hesitated to throw them overboard and to let them drown in the Atlantic as soon as they became sick and weak.
In this way he avoided squandering food and water on "cargo" that would not fetch a good price.
John Newton composed "Amazing Grace" whilst returning to Liverpool without a load of Slaves but with a load of Sugar and Cotton.
His ship was seriously damaged in a violent storm and it was on the brink of sinking when John Newton kneeled down in the wheelhouse and prayed aloud.
His prayer turned out to be "Amazing Grace".
But John Newton continued to traffic in Slaves for another eight years until health problems forced him to sell his Ship.
It is on record that John Newton wept unashamedly when he handed over his ship to the new owner.
He explained that being the Owner-Captain of a Slave Ship was a very lucrative and idyllic way of life and that he will forever regret having to abandon it.
For the next five years John Newton worked as the Recorder of Tides for the Liverpool Harbour Authority.
But he spent his Sundays as a Lay Preacher in the Village of Orley.
His preaching was so very impressive that the Church of Orley had to be very greatly enlarged to accommodate worshippers who travelled from far afield simply to hear John Newton sermonise.
When John Newton applied to be officially categorised as a Minister of Religion, the ArchBishop of Manchester rejected his application because of his past history as a Slave Trader.
But the famous poet John Cowper was so enthralled by Newton's brilliant sermons that he used his influence to have John Newton installed as the Rector of St. Mary's Cathedral in Woolnich.
John Newton was the Rector of St.Mary's until he died and his remains were buried in its churchyard.
At no time did John Newton ever express remorse for his participation in the Slave Trade.
